In an increasingly digital world, leaders have access to more data than ever, but human bias can easily warp which data gets collected and how it’s analyzed.īe wary not just of your own preconceived notions when interpreting data but of the human biases that have been built into machines. Identify your biases-and those embedded in data If you’re not willing to take a step back after identifying a data gap, the evidence and conclusions will be flawed. Never be afraid to iterate, gather more data, and analyze it again. If data collection seems burdensome and expensive, leaders should consider adopting the type of lean data approach developed by Acumen and Harvard Business School to tackle the complexities of data usage in decision-making. To understand which supervisors need help in boosting morale, it isn’t enough just to look at the overall results you must also break down the data by team and make sure that you have an adequate survey response rate that represents most-if not all-employees. As a decision-maker, you have a responsibility to review the disaggregate data and ask how it was gathered and analyzed.įor example, imagine your organization conducts an annual staff survey to inform its strategic priorities. If you lead a development organization or a large project, you’re likely receiving regular reports from staff with insights and recommendations. Ensure data is representative of all groupsĮmploying a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens in every decision might be time-consuming, but it is necessary. In contrast, starting with a clearly defined problem and question before collecting data helps to ensure that the data you collect will meet a real need. ![]() Too often in development, we find ourselves looking at available data first and then searching for a problem or decision the data could help us address. The first step is to articulate an information gap that, if resolved, would facilitate more effective decisions.Īsk yourself, “What evidence would be valuable and influential as I make this decision?” The foundation of a data-informed decision-making process is to formulate a question or problem statement to determine your objectives and better inform the data gathering, cleaning, and analysis.įor example, the human resources department at Google wanted to answer the following question: “Do managers make a difference in their team’s performance?” By asking this clearly defined question at the outset, the team was able to identify relevant data sources, such as employee surveys and performance reviews, to better inform hiring, training, and (when necessary) firing decisions about managers. Here are five tips for making data-informed decisions in these and other real-world scenarios. Sometimes using data to make decisions would even have a negative impact on colleagues and be strongly opposed by important stakeholders. Development professionals want to use data to inform decisions, but often the available datasets don’t address the relevant questions or it’s unclear how the data was gathered.

Once a day, we run a process called the “tile builder.” Essentially, it translates the changes in the editor to the Waze map. How long until Waze map edits show up?Īfter you make an edit, it doesn’t go live immediately. As you make more edits, you earn access to higher levels, which come with more permissions. When you look at a street in the editing platform, you’ll see a lock, which shows the level you need to achieve to edit it. Level six editors, on the other hand, may have country-wide access. Everyone starts out at level one and can only make edits that are available to level one editors, like making changes within a one-mile radius. The second kind involves locked levels, ranging from one through six. The first kind of permissions is granted to new users, who can only edit areas they drive in, which means they’re just contributing their local knowledge. Since most edits aren’t reviewed before they go live, the map uses a permissioning system with two types of permissions to ensure accuracy. That’s one of the ways the community protects the map. ![]() New editors typically want to fix a specific, one-off problem, but they need to have the right permissions. Mentorships and events like map raids help strengthen the community and improve the map. Then you’ll see the street network where you can make basic edits like adding street numbers or editing roads in your neighborhood. The first time you log in, you’ll see tutorial videos and resources to help you navigate the platform. If you open it to fix something minor, it can be a little overwhelming because there’s so much you can do. The first place a new editor goes is the editing platform. ![]() That’s the common thread between many of our editors: When they see a problem, they take the extra step of fixing it for themselves and for other people in the community. They’ll report the issue, and once they learn they actually have the power to make the change, they take the initiative. A lot of people start because they see an error on the map - maybe their address is missing, they want to add a business location, or they got a route that didn’t make sense to them. How people (usually) become Waze map editorsĪnyone can become a map editor. While any Wazer can report real-time alerts like traffic or hazards on the road, only map editors can make updates like new streets or changes in turning lanes.Įditors can select segments of the road in the editing platform to add updates like real-time road closures. There are tens of thousands of people from around the world in places like Brazil, the U.S., Europe, APAC, and Israel who volunteer their time. To put in brief terms, map editors build, fix, and protect the map. Waze Map Editors: The heroes behind the map There are many moving parts behind-the-scenes, but anyone can be part of the magic. They add roads, mark real-time road closures, and map new features like lane guidance, all for the sake of helping their fellow Wazers. But behind every Waze route is a community of volunteer editors getting you to your destination as efficiently as possible. To the rest of the world, the map might seem like something really simple that just shows up when you put in an address. ![]() As Communities Team Manager, I’ve been working with map editors for four and a half years now. 1/4/2024 0 Comments Filemaker pro for mac downloadSo here’s where I want to encourage everyone to think about the apps and services upon which you rely, and more to the point, the data created with them or stored in their proprietary formats. But with Bento, it was quite reasonable to think that buying popular commercial software from Apple-subsidiary FileMaker would be a near guarantee of future-proofing - could it get any safer? Apparently, yes, it could. More generally, it’s often said of free services, especially those from small companies, that you get what you pay for. Of course, Bento won’t stop working any time soon, but without future development, there’s no telling what update to OS X or iOS will sound its death knell, and migrations are generally easier before compatibility starts being a problem. Most notably, of course, is how at least hundreds of thousands of Mac and iOS users have been left high and dry, and not just for any old app, but for database software, which almost by definition holds important data. I’m sure there are other possibilities too - let us know in the comments what you’re looking at to take over from Bento.įileMaker’s announcement is troubling from several viewpoints. In other words, it should be possible to get data out of Bento, and you’ll likely want to do so before FileMaker drops support for Bento a year from now on 30 July 2014.Īs to what you should import into, if you’re not interested in buying FileMaker Pro, you might investigate ProVUE Development’s $39.95 Panorama Sheets on the Mac (see “ ProVUE’s Panorama Gets a Baby Brother: Panorama Sheets,” 7 January 2011). On the iPad, comma-separated-value export (sent via email) is all that’s available, though you can also download the free trial version of Bento for Mac, sync your data with it, and then export on the Mac. It’s also possible to export Bento data into tab-delimited and comma-separated-value text files, and into Numbers and Excel 2008 formats. While FileMaker Pro offers vastly more power and flexibility than Bento, even its discounted $179 price is a big jump from Bento’s $49 price, if your database needs aren’t extensive. Plus, FileMaker Pro doesn’t support Bento’s Rating, Encrypted, Simple List, File List, and Message List field types, and Bento’s Collections and Smart Collections have no direct equivalents in FileMaker Pro, although you can set up ![]() There are limitations, though, since FileMaker Pro has no integration with the Mac Contacts, iCal, and iPhoto apps, nor does it offer Wi-Fi syncing between Mac and iOS versions. Needless to say, FileMaker is encouraging Bento users to investigate whether FileMaker Pro might be an alternative, even offering both the Bento 4 to FileMaker Pro Migration Tool to convert data and a 40 percent discount on FileMaker Pro, dropping the $299 price to $179. For a while, it seemed as though Bento might become FileMaker’s iOS solution, but Bento never gained any integration with FileMaker Pro itself, and the company ended up releasing separate FileMaker Go iOS apps (see “ FileMaker Go Brings FileMaker Databases to iOS,” 9 February 2012, and “ FileMaker 12 Adds Power, Clarity, and Free iOS Apps,” 4 April 2012). But with FileMaker’s marketing muscle behind it, Bento sold well, shipping more than one million units as of January 2012.ĭespite those sales numbers, FileMaker has announced that it is discontinuing Bento, as of 30 September 2013, to “increase focus on FileMaker Product Line software.” Read FileMaker’s Knowledge Base article for more details. Although FileMaker improved Bento over the years, adding an iPhone version of the app, and later an iPad version, and even gaining adherents for whom Bento’s limitations weren’t deal-breakers (see Charles Maurer’s “ Wine with Bento,” 20 August 2008), Bento never struck a chord with It was a worthy goal, but as even the title of Jeff Porten’s coverage of the preview edition indicated - “ FileMaker’s Bento: Undercooked and Slightly Fishy” (14 November 2007) - it was an uphill battle from the start. released a new database program called Bento, designed to bring simple databases to the masses. ![]() ![]()
